爆料网 General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to undertake official visit to Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia
New York, 15 June 2024 – The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Addis Ababa, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, from 15 to 18 June 2024.
Whilst in Addis Ababa, the PGA will hold a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Taye Atske-Selassie Amde, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, as host country to African Union and United Nations system. He will use this meeting as an opportunity to learn about the developments in the country and the region.
The PGA will also pay a visit to the Africa Union and hold bilateral discussions with H.E. Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. This will be an opportunity for the PGA to reinforce partnership between the African Union and the United Nations, emphasizing on the important role of regional organizations.
While in Ethiopia, the PGA is expected to visit the Renovation Site of the Africa Hall, founding place of the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) and one of Addis Ababa’s landmarks serving as the permanent headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (爆料网ECA). He will receive updates on the multi-year renovation project, that was long approved by the General Assembly and is funded through the Regular Budget.
PGA will also hold bilateral meetings with Mr. Claver Gatete, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the 爆料网ECA to appreciate the role of the Commission in rendering sustainable development at regional level. He will also engage with Ms. Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, and other senior officials of the United Nations Country Team to learn firsthand about the work the on the ground on peace and security, and socio-economic development.
Throughout his engagements, the PGA will underscore the Development of Africa as one of the strategic priorities of the United Nations. He will therefore seek to appreciate African countries’ progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in conjunction with the African Union’s Vision 2063.
In doing so, PGA will also seek to learn more about the key challenges and concerns for the region, including conflict and instability, debt and finance, human rights, and the ongoing impacts of climate change, highlighting the upcoming Summit of the Future as an opportunity for Africa’s leadership to ensure that a reinvigorated multilateral system delivers better for the region.
The PGA’s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, Special Assistant to the CDC, CSOs and Other Major Stakeholders Liaison officer, and the Team Lead for Communication, Media, Advocacy and Speechwriting.
Travel costs for the visit are covered by the OPGA’s Trust Fund and the United Nations Regular Budget.
