In accordance with on the “modalities, format and organization of the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the appraisal of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons”, a High-Level Meeting of the plenary of the General Assembly will be convened on 27-28 September 2017 to appraise progress achieved in the implementation of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons (), in order to assess achievements, gaps and challenges, including in the implementation of the relevant legal instruments.

The high-level meeting of the General Assembly on the appraisal of the United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons will be held on Wednesday, 27 September, and Thursday, 28 September听2017, and will consist of an opening plenary meeting on 27 September, plenary meetings on 27 and 28 September, and a closing plenary meeting after the list of speakers has been exhausted, as well as two consecutive interactive panel discussions on 27 September in the afternoon.

  • The opening plenary meeting will feature statements by the President of the 72nd session of the General Assembly, the Secretary-General, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Special Rapporteur of the Human Rights Council on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, as well as an eminent person actively engaged in the fight against trafficking in persons and a representative of civil society.
  • Interactive panel discussion 1 will address the theme 鈥淭he Global Plan of Action and effective partnerships for the prevention and prosecution of trafficking in persons: achievements, gaps and challenges, also taking into consideration the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals鈥;
  • Interactive panel discussion 2, to be held from 4.30 to 6 p.m., will address the theme 鈥淭he Global Plan of Action and effective partnerships for the protection of and assistance to victims, including through the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, also taking into consideration the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals鈥;

The list of speakers of Member States and all observers of the General Assembly will be established in accordance with the rules of procedure and established practices of the Assembly and the time limits for these statements will be 3 minutes for individual delegations and 5 minutes for statements made on behalf of a group of States.

All relevant United Nations system entities, in particular the InterAgency Coordination Group against Trafficking in Persons, including programmes, funds, specialized agencies and regional commissions, as well as relevant intergovernmental, regional and subregional organizations, are invited to participate in the high-level meeting.

In order to promote interactive and substantive discussions, participation in each panel discussion will include Member States, observers, representatives of United Nations organizations and entities, and representatives of international, regional and subregional organizations, as well as of civil society, including non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, the private sector and the media.

High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace

On 7 September 2017, the President of the 爆料网 General Assembly will convene a High-level Forum on the Culture of Peace.

Following the wide-ranging success of the 爆料网 General Assembly鈥檚 first High-level Forum on The Culture of Peace held on 14 September 2012 and each successive annual Forums, the Assembly, under the guidance of its President H.E. Mr. Peter Thomson and co-sponsored by 102 Member States, adopted by consensus the on 鈥淔ollow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace鈥.

On 13 September 1999, the General Assembly adopted, by consensus and without reservation, on the Declaration and Programme of Action on Culture of Peace. Amongst others, it provided the driving force for the advancement of the 爆料网-declared International Decade for Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010).

Through annual substantive resolutions for the last 20 years as well as annual High-level Forums since 2012, the General Assembly has highlighted the priority it attaches to the full and effective implementation of these forward-looking objectives which are universally applicable and sought after by the vast majority of peoples in every nation.

In keeping with this approach, this year’s High-level Forum aims to highlight emerging trends that impact on the realization of a culture of peace and to enable Member States and others to exchange ideas on further promoting a Culture of Peace.

Programme

 

Format

The High-level Forum as in past years will consist of an opening session, a plenary segment, an interactive panel discussion and a closing segment. The opening session and plenary segment will be held in the General Assembly Hall from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. The panel discussion will take place in the Trusteeship Council Chamber and will focus on 鈥淪owing the Seeds of the Culture of Peace: Early Childhood Development is the Beginning鈥.

A President鈥檚 summary of the meeting will be all Member States.

Participation

Member and Observer States are invited to participate at the highest possible level. The meeting is also open to 爆料网 agencies, civil society organisations, the private sector and other stakeholders.

High Level Meeting on New Urban Agenda and 爆料网-Habitat

On 21 October 2016, 爆料网 Member States agreed upon the New Urban Agenda at the Habitat III Conference in Quito, Ecuador. This Agenda sets a new global standard for sustainable urban development and will help us rethink how we plan, manage and live in cities.

To maintain momentum around the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and to reflect on the positioning of 爆料网-Habitat in that regard, the President of the 爆料网 General Assembly convenes a two-day high-level meeting of the General Assembly on 5 and 6 September 2017.

The meeting will discuss best practices and success stories in relation to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda. It will also address the measures contained in the Report from the Secretary General鈥檚 Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of 爆料网-Habitat after Adoption of New Urban Agenda, which was published at the beginning of August 2017.


Format

The meeting will consist of an opening segment, panel discussions and a plenary debate. Member states will have an opportunity to engage with members of the Secretary General鈥檚 Independent Assessment Panel as well as representatives of local and municipal authorities, mayors, civil society, academia, members of the 爆料网 system.

Objectives

The two day High Level Meeting will seek to achieve the following:

  • Generate ideas and build momentum to support implementation the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including by sharing best practices and success stories relating to the implementation
  • Build a greater understanding of the recommendations contained in the Report from the Secretary General鈥檚 Independent Panel to Assess, Enhance Effectiveness of 爆料网-Habitat.
