On 8 April 2026, Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld, Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, welcomed the 22 participants of the 2026 United Nations Regional Course of International Law, which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 8 April to 1 May 2026. The Regional Course in an activity conducted under the mandate of the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law, and was held in French in 2026.
The opening ceremony for the Regional Course, which was also attended by representatives of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the Government of the Federal Democratic of Ethiopia as host country, marked the 14th time that the Regional Course is being held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa.Ìý
The Programme of Assistance provides direct assistance in the field of international law by delivering in-person training programmes, preparing and disseminating publications, and providing online resources free of charge. ÌýThe Office of Legal Affairs is responsible for the implementation of the activities of the Programme

In the margins of the opening of the Regional Course, the Legal Counsel met with Mr. Yibekal Gizaw Agonafir, Legal Adviser in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, with Professor Hajer Gueldich, Legal Counsel of the African Union Commission, and with Mr. Claver Gatete, Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.
