The Future Role and Contribution of Development Banks to Finance SDGs

  • Date: 14 July 2015, 3:30pm - 6:00pm
  • Location: Elilly Classic Hall

Organised by

International Development Finance Club

organizing members of the IDFC:

  • Development Bank of Southern Africa, South Africa
  • Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, Germany
  • Agence francaise de Développement, France

Summary

Development Banks can make a real difference: They apply banking standards to address those developmental challenges which the private banking sector alone is unwilling or unable to take up. They use market forces to overcome market failures and to redirect the flow of funds towards underprivileged sections. They mobilize large additional private funds from international financial markets and employ them to address the SDGs. By mixing market and public funds they increase the efficiency and distributional justice of Development Assistance (stronger partners and projects must accept harder financial conditions). Against this background the key question is: How can Governments unlock the full potential of Development Banks?

The IDFC invites the delegates to follow the panel discussion with high-level representatives and key actors in the field of development finance. Visitors of the side event will have the opportunity to enrich the debate on how development finance, specifically in a framework of new SDGs is most effective.”
