Summary

This session will see the launch a new report on health financing in Africa. The report, which uses Kenya as a case study, explores the challenges that low-income countries face when they transition to middle-income status. Through an assessment of the main global funding streams, the report focusses on the emerging importance of domestic resource mobilisation alongside the continuing role of ODA for strengthening public health systems.

Singer and campaigner, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, ‘the Princess of Africa’, will open the event and give her views on why increased and sustainable finance for health is crucial if African countries are to achieve Universal Health Coverage and ‘leave no-one behind’.

The session will begin with a brief summary of the report conclusions before an expert panel debate on what can be done to increase financing for health in Kenya and other countries that have recently graduated. Our panel includes (invited):

• Dr. Tim Evans, Senior Director, Health Nutrition and Population Global Practice at the World Bank Group
• Mark Dybul, Executive Director, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria,
• Representatives from the Governments of Kenya and the UK (TBC)
• Civil Society/Health worker representative
