Around the world and across diverse contexts, young people share many of the same aspirations: to learn, to contribute, to participate and to build a better future for themselves, their communities and the world.

On International Youth Day 2026, the United Nations Youth Office is highlighting the importance of future-ready skills ¡ª the knowledge, competencies and mindsets that enable young people not only to navigate a rapidly changing world, but also to shape it.

As technological change accelerates and artificial intelligence transforms the way we live and work, digital and AI literacy are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, human-centred competencies such as critical thinking, collaboration, empathy and resilience are more valuable than ever. Preparing for the future is not only about anticipating change. It is about ensuring that every young person has equitable opportunities to develop the skills they need to thrive, lead and contribute as the world around them rapidly changes.

Young people are not only beneficiaries of education and skills systems; they are essential partners in shaping them. Their perspectives, lived experiences and ideas are critical to building policies and opportunities that are inclusive, relevant and responsive to the realities they face.

Through a collaboration with S&P Global and the S&P Foundation as part of the initiative, the United Nations Youth Office is developing a global campaign to elevate youth voices, experiences and solutions around the future of skills and work. Through storytelling, digital engagement, youth consultations and global advocacy moments, the campaign creates platforms for young people from diverse backgrounds to share the opportunities and barriers they face in accessing skills development and decent work. The initiative also helps spotlight innovative youth-led solutions and strengthen global awareness and action around investing in equitable, future-oriented skills pathways for all young people.
