  {"id":318437,"date":"2026-05-21T08:54:39","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T12:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=318437"},"modified":"2026-06-03T14:22:43","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T18:22:43","slug":"ocha-medical-supplies-enter-gaza-but-health-system-still-strained","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/ocha-medical-supplies-enter-gaza-but-health-system-still-strained\/","title":{"rendered":"OCHA: Medical supplies enter Gaza, but health system still strained"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>21 May 2026<\/p>\n<p>More than 180 pallets of medical items including vaccines, refrigerated medicine and sanitation supplies were collected yesterday from the Kerem Shalom crossing in Gaza, OCHA reports.<\/p>\n<p>These supplies will support\u00a0services\u00a0in a health system that\u00a0is still\u00a0nowhere near\u00a0full recovery.\u00a0The\u00a0World\u00a0Health\u00a0Organization (WHO)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/attacks-on-health-care-in-the-gaza-strip-1-january-2026-30-april-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0just over half of primary health care facilities are\u00a0currently\u00a0functioning,\u00a0and slightly more than\u00a0half of\u00a0the hospitals\u00a0are operational, although only partially.<\/p>\n<p>Since the start of the year, WHO in Gaza has recorded 22\u202fattacks on health care, resulting in casualties or affecting health transport and health facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Despite impediments, humanitarians continue to deliver assistance at scale and between 4 May and 17 May, ±¬ÁÏÍøICEF distributed hygiene and dignity kits, alongside jerry cans, benefiting about 116,000 people across Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarian partners say that access to water\u00a0remains\u00a0challenging, with\u00a0three out of four families relying\u00a0on water\u00a0carried by\u00a0truck.\u00a0Partners\u00a0are delivering\u00a0about 24,000 cubic\u00a0metres\u00a0by truck every day across\u00a0some 2,000 distribution points.\u00a0However, water deliveries depend on generators and machinery that\u00a0are\u00a0at risk of breaking down due to the shortage of maintenance and repair supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Humanitarians continue to stress that essential supplies must be allowed into Gaza urgently to avoid the risk of equipment collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the West Bank, OCHA reports that settler violence continues. Between 12 May and 18 May, OCHA documented at least 49 attacks by settlers that caused casualties or damage, including a rise in arson attacks against homes, farmland, vehicles \u202fand a mosque. With this, over 870 settler attacks across more than 220 communities have caused casualties or property damage this year.<\/p>\n<p>WHO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emro.who.int\/images\/stories\/palestine\/WB_Health_Access_1_Jan_-_30_Apr_26.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a> that in the first four months of this year, more than a third of the requests by patients to seek treatment in East Jerusalem and Israel were either denied or remained pending.
