  {"id":293082,"date":"2024-02-07T15:29:26","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T20:29:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/?post_type=document&#038;p=293082"},"modified":"2024-02-07T15:29:26","modified_gmt":"2024-02-07T20:29:26","slug":"gaza-war-enters-fifth-month-amid-reports-of-potential-ceasefire-deal-un-news-7feb-2024","status":"publish","type":"document","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/gaza-war-enters-fifth-month-amid-reports-of-potential-ceasefire-deal-un-news-7feb-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Gaza war enters fifth month amid reports of potential ceasefire deal &#8211; ±¬ÁÏÍø News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>7 February 2024<\/p>\n<p><strong>As the devastating Gaza-Israel war entered its fifth month on Wednesday leaving a reported 27,585 Palestinians dead and nearly 70,000 injured, the ±¬ÁÏÍø\u2019s top humanitarian official welcomed early indications of a \u201cpotential breakthrough\u201d in negotiations for a ceasefire and the release of all remaining hostages.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the \u201cpotentially positive news\u201d surrounding the \u201chuge efforts\u201d involved in the latest international push for peace in Gaza spearheaded by Egypt, Qatar and the United States, Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, noted the possibility of\u00a0<strong>\u201ca long period of a pause (in fighting) to allow hostages out and Palestinian prisoners out\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This phase might then be followed by another period of calm \u201cwhich could lead to an end to the war\u201d between Hamas and Israel, the veteran humanitarian told journalists in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another hospital at risk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The development came as the ±¬ÁÏÍø aid coordination office,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OCHA<\/a>, reported continuing \u201cintense bombardment\u201d across much of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, particularly in the city of Khan Younis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor over two weeks, heavy fighting continues to be reported near Nasser and Al Amal hospitals in Khan Younis, jeopardizing the safety of medical staff, the wounded and the sick as well as thousands of internally displaced persons seeking refuge at both hospitals,\u201d OCHA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ochaopt.org\/content\/hostilities-gaza-strip-and-israel-flash-update-112?_gl=1*1s00k5l*_ga*MTMyMzY1Njc5OC4xNzAzNTgzODg1*_ga_E60ZNX2F68*MTcwNzI5OTA1NC4xNC4xLjE3MDcyOTkxNDMuNjAuMC4w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0in its latest update on the crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Citing the local health authority, the situation update noted that Israeli forces had \u201cintensified their siege\u201d of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, putting at risk \u201c300 medical personnel, 450 wounded and some 10,000 displaced people seeking shelter in the hospital compound\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018Four days of fuel left\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a severe shortage of surgical supplies and sutures, and there is an estimated four days left of the amount of fuel needed to power hospital generators,\u201d according OCHA, which added that another Israeli soldier had been reportedly killed during the ground operation from 5 to 6 February, bringing the total number of military fatalities to 224 with 1,304 injured.<\/p>\n<p>After months of bombardment, three in four Gazans are now displaced.
