Arabic: \u0627\u0644\u0639\u0631\u0628\u064a\u0629<\/a><\/p>\n It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Commissioner-General Ilter T\u00fcrkmen, who served the Agency between 1991 and 1996 \u00a0in Istanbul yesterday. A seasoned diplomat, prior to working with ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA, Mr. \u00a0T\u00fcrkmen served as Turkey\u2019s \u00a0Permanent Representative to the United Nations both in New York and Geneva, and also as the Foreign Minister of Turkey between 1980-1983. Mr. T\u00fcrkmen joined ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA as Commissioner-General during a difficult period and was a strong supporter of the pioneering Refugee Affairs Officer programme that provided passive protection to Palestine refugees in the occupied Palestinian territory during the first intifada.\u00a0 He leaves behind a legacy that has had ripple effects on ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA and the Palestine refugee population it serves.
