The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Neat East (±¬ÁÏÍøRWA) Pierre Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl, has urgently called on Arab states for their continued financial and political support to Palestine refugees and to the work and role of the Agency at the Arab League Summit.<\/p>\n

Addressing the 152nd<\/sup>\u00a0session of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers, Mr. Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl highlighted that the work of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA remains vital, especially as long as there is no just and lasting solution to the plight of Palestine refugees.\u00a0 He thanked member states of the League of Arab States for their support and asked them to show the same level of commitment to defending ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA as has been the case in all previous years, particularly in the run-up to the renewal of the Agency\u2019s mandate in November.<\/p>\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Commissioner-General held meetings with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Dr. Ahmad Aboul Gheit and with the foreign ministers of Egypt, the State of Palestine, Iraq and Qatar, as well as with the Deputy Foreign Minister of Kuwait in Cairo on Tuesday, 10 September.<\/p>\n

\u201c±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is facing enormous political challenges,\u201d said Arab League Secretary-General Ahmad Aboul Gheit. \u201cI call on Member States to protect funding to ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA and to ensure the smooth renewal of the Agency\u2019s mandate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr. Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl reiterated his and the Agency\u2019s gratitude to members of the League of Arab States for their outstanding support in 2018; the most financially challenging year since ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA was created in 1949. Mr. Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl also reminded them that the crisis is neither resolved nor was it simply financial in nature.<\/p>\n

Running at an annual budget of US$ 1.2 billion, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is mandated to serve 5.5 million Palestine refugees through the Agency\u2019s education, health, social and protection services in five areas of operations. Last week, 709 ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA schools opened their doors for a new scholastic year to over 530,000 girls and boys across the region. In 2018, over 8 million medical consultations were conducted in 143 ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA health centres. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA services not only contribute to the wellbeing and development of human beings, they also provide a sense of normalcy and stability to those who receive them.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last eighteen months, we have witnessed severe attempts to delegitimize the Agency and what it does, either by questioning the very basis of our mandate or the definition of who we serve,\u201d said Mr. Kr\u00e4henb\u00fchl. \u201cStanding with ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA and its services in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Gaza, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan is paramount not only for the human development of Palestine refugees, but also\u00a0 for the preservation of regional stability.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA programme budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency\u2019s programme budget. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.<\/p>\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5.4 million Palestine refugees registered with ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA across its five fields of operation. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
