±¬ÁÏÍø Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (±¬ÁÏÍøRWA) denies allegations made online by the IDF Spokesperson that Palestinian militants are using ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA schools or facilities in Gaza to fire rockets into Israel.<\/p><\/div>\n

On 17 November 2012 at 22:16, the Israeli Defense Forces tweeted from their official Twitter account (@IDFSpokesperson) a link to a video hosted on their official YouTube channel, featuring an animated film that depicts militants firing rockets from a school clearly marked with the ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA insignia.<\/p><\/div>\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is concerned about the creation and use of footage that wrongly suggests that ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is allowing its premises to be used for terrorist activities in the current conflict and the unauthorised use of its logo in computer-generated material. In a situation of conflict these allegations have potentially grave consequences. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA takes with utmost seriousness the neutrality of its installations, particularly in times of heightened violence.<\/p><\/div>\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, microfinance and emergency assistance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Financial support to ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund, supporting ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the budget deficit stands at USD 21 million.<\/p><\/div>\n
