Jerusalem, 11 October 2005 – In stark contrast to the relative openness that the Government allows for NGOs based in Israel, the human rights defenders in the Occupied Palestinian Territories operate under conditions that are absolutely incompatible with international norms and standards, an ±¬ÁÏÍø expert said today.\n<\/p><\/div>\n

The Special Representative of the ±¬ÁÏÍø Secretary General on human rights defenders, Hina Jilani, <\/span>speaking<\/a> at the conclusion of a one-week trip to Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, said she was especially concerned with the situation of field workers, who face daily harassment, intimidation and humiliation in the course of conducting their work.

Jilani's comments were based on preliminary findings. She will submit a detailed report on her visit to the ±¬ÁÏÍø Commission on Human Rights in early 2006.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n
