Syria: Palestine Refugees – Humanitarian Snapshot March 2015<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Yarmouk: <\/strong>On 5 March 2015, the Agency was able to resume food distribution for the first time since 6 December 2014, <\/strong>from a new entry point established to the east of Yarmouk. <\/strong>Throughout March, the ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA was able to access Yarmouk on 14 <\/strong>days, distributing a total of 4,463 <\/strong>family food parcels and conducting 1,191 <\/strong>health consultations at its temporary health point.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krahenbuhl <\/strong>visited Yarmouk on 10 March <\/strong>to meet with some of the 18,000 <\/strong>Palestine refugees trapped in the area. In response to widespread deprivation and malnutrition among residents of Yarmouk, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA calls for safe and continuous access to the area and other areas that remain hard to reach.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

Humanitarian Response<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

CASH ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

The first distribution round of cash assistance in 2015 started on 18 January. By March 2015, the Agency provided 57,626 persons (14,406 families) with two months of cash assistance through 31 distribution points. Cash assistance is one of the most efficient forms of cash assistance, enabling refugee families to cover their basic needs such as food and rent.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

FOOD ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

In March, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA distributed 28,273 food parcels to families via 15 distribution centers and collective centres in the Damascus area, Dera’a, Sweida, Neirab, Homs, Latakia and Aleppo. The Agency’s emergency food programme targets 460,000 Palestine refugees in Syria<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

HEALTH:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA provides health services to up to 480,000 Palestine refugees throughout Syria. In January and February this year, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA health staff conducted 181,416 patient consultations in 14 health centers and 11 health points. The provision of primary health care services remains essential to combat the results of conflict, displacement and exhaustion of Palestine refugees.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

EDUCATION:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA upgraded eight teaching points to support children residing in collective centres. The teaching points will focus on providing supervised learning support using self-learning materials covering Mathematics, English, Arabic, French and Science. The Agency continues to provide primary education to over 45,000 Palestine refugee students in Syria in 48 ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA schools and 47 school buildings provided by the Ministry of Education.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

NON FOOD ITEM ASSISTANCE:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA distributed 1,114 blankets and 66 mattresses to collective centers Rif Damascus and the Syria Field Office.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

ASSISTANCE TO COLLECTIVE CENTRES:<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is housing 10,570 <\/strong>Palestine refugees and internally-displaced Syrians (2,657 <\/strong>families) in 30 <\/strong>±¬ÁÏÍøRWA and non-±¬ÁÏÍøRWA managed temporary collective centers in Damascus and surrounding areas. In Aleppo, Latakia and Homs, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA supports 1,649 <\/strong>Palestine refugees and internally displaced Syrians (381 <\/strong>families). ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA shelters and ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA managed temporary shelters are home to 145 <\/strong>newborn infants, 197 <\/strong>persons with disabilities and one unaccompanied child. Refugees in shelters are provided with food assistance and non-food items, as well as regular health and social services. In addition, the Agency conducts regular maintenance of its WASH facilities.<\/p><\/div>\n

\n

WATER SANITATION & HYGIENE<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n

\n

±¬ÁÏÍøRWA distributed 3,463 hygiene kits to refugees in collective centers. Each hygiene kit contains soap, shampoo, disinfectant, washing detergent and other sanitary items to last a family of four for one month. The Agency was unable to distribute hygiene kits to refugees in Yarmouk in March. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA conducts regular maintenance, garbage collection, plumbing and sanitation works in all accessible facilities, camps and gatherings. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA distributed 31,656 adult and baby diaperpacks to all displaced refugee families, in addition to 397 baby kits.<\/p><\/div>\n
