Amman
±¬ÁÏÍø Relief and Works Agency (±¬ÁÏÍøRWA) has distributed the first quarter of emergency cash assistance provided by the Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor Foundation (KAHF) to Palestine refugees in Syria. The US$ 100,000 contribution, made in October of last year, has enabled members of this vulnerable population to meet their immediate food needs in recent months. The collaboration between ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA and KAHF to distribute emergency cash assistance to those most in need will continue throughout 2013.
The funds received so far have helped some 510 Palestine refugees, many of whom have lost their livelihoods as a result of the current violence. Each of the 510 Palestine refugees has received a cash grant valued at US$ 42.00 (equivalent to SYP 3,000). In total, the KAHF contribution will allow the Agency to distribute cash to approximately 2,100 refugees. The funds were distributed at ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA schools, currently sheltering displaced refugees in areas around Damascus.
Welcoming the donation, Director of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Affairs in Syria Mr. Michael Kingsley-Nyinah said: "±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is very grateful to KAHF for this generous donation and its ongoing support. It comes at a time when Palestine refugees in Syria are in greatest need and reflects KAHF’s commitment to supporting them. Under the Syria Humanitarian Response Plan, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA will complete implementation of the donation by supporting vulnerable Palestine refugees who have been displaced.”

Background information
±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.
Financial support to ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 67.2 million.
