Syrians Give ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA US $38,685 for Emergency Assistance
±¬ÁÏÍø Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (±¬ÁÏÍøRWA) has received a cheque for SYP two million (US$ 38,685), donated by the Syrian people to help hundreds of families whose homes have been demolished or severely damaged in the recent spate of violence and incursions in Jabalia camp, Gaza.
Mr ‘Adel al-Saadi, Finance Officer of the Syrian Arab Popular Committee (SAPC), which raises funds for the victims of unrest in the West Bank and Gaza, handed the cheque to Mr Lex Takkenberg, Director of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Affairs in Syria on 11 October.
At the Committee’s request, the money will help provide families in need with cash assistance to meet their basic needs following the recent events.
On behalf of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA Commissioner-General and the Palestine refugees, Mr Takkenberg thanked the Committee for its rapid response to the crisis in Gaza. “This donation brings to US$2,937,731 the Syrian people’s contributions to ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s
emergency programmes since the start of Intifada” he said. He renewed ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s gratitude and appreciation for the SAPC’s continued efforts to raise funds to support Palestine refugees in the West Bank and through ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA.
‘Adel al-Saadi reiterated the SAPC’s confidence in ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s assistance to Palestine refugees and applauded the Agency for its speed in responding to refugees’ emergency needs.
Since October 2000, ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East has been providing emergency humanitarian assistance to over 1,6 million registered refugees and thousands of other Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza, in addition to the Agency’s regular education, health, relief and social services.
