UAE PLEDGES $15 MILLION FOR PALESTINE REFUGEES IN SYRIA
22 July 2014
The United Arab Emirates Ministry of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD) on Monday 21 July provided a donation of $15 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (±¬ÁÏÍøRWA) to distribute desperately needed food-aid to Palestine refugees who continue to suffer the worst effects of Syria’s civil war, now in its fourth year.
Her Excellency Shaikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al-Qasimi signed into agreement the generous donation which will allow ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA to provide food-aid for over 360,000 Palestine refugees most in need across Syria. The Commissioner General of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA, Pierre Krähenbühl, applauded the contribution from MICAD saying: “The Commissioner General of ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA, Pierre Krähenbühl, applauded the contribution from MICAD saying: “This $15 million donation from UAE through MICAD is extremely welcome, and comes as a timely reminder of the continued war in Syria. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA continues to operate wherever Palestine refugees are in need, and the situation for those Palestine refugees in Syria remains as desperate as ever.”
BACKGRO±¬ÁÏÍøD INFORMATION
±¬ÁÏÍøRWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and is mandated to provide assistance and protection to a population of some 5 million registered Palestine refugees. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank and the Gaza Strip to achieve their full potential in human development, pending a just solution to their plight. ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, and microfinance.
Financial support to ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA has not kept pace with an increased demand for services caused by growing numbers of registered refugees, expanding need, and deepening poverty. As a result, the Agency's General Fund (GF), supporting ±¬ÁÏÍøRWA’s core activities and 97 per cent reliant on voluntary contributions, has begun each year with a large projected deficit. Currently the deficit stands at US$ 68 million.
