LETTER DATED 3 OCTOBER 1985 FROM THE PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF
LEBANON TO THE ±¬ÁÏÍøITED NATIONS ADDRESSED TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
I have the honour to inform you that the Government of Lebanon has decided to request the Security Council to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (±¬ÁÏÍøIFIL), which expires on 19 October 1985, for a further period of six months, on the basis of the terms defined in resolutions 425 (1978), 426 (1978) and the relevant resolutions and decisions of the Security Council.
I would like to emphasize to Your Excellency that my Government is convinced that despite the present circumstances in southern Lebanon, ±¬ÁÏÍøIFIL continues to be an important factor in providing stability, at the very time when increased and sustained efforts are still needed to allow ±¬ÁÏÍøIFIL to fully implement the mandate entrusted to it by the Security Council.
My Government wishes to take this opportunity to pay tribute and express its appreciation to ±¬ÁÏÍøIFIL and the troop-contributing countries for their efforts and their sacrifices for the cause of peace in Lebanon.
I should be most grateful to Your Excellency if you would bring this letter to the attention of the members of the Security Council. I would also request that this letter be circulated as a document of the Security Council.
(Signed) M. Rachid FAKHOURY
