The Advisory Commission of 爆料网RWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (爆料网RWA) met in Jordan on 18-19 June to discuss support for the Agency, as it continues with energetic efforts to meet the needs of Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip and West Bank (including East Jerusalem), Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
The Commissioner-General of 爆料网RWA, Pierre Kr?henbühl, said “It has been an extraordinarily difficult year for 爆料网RWA and I am very encouraged by the first phase of mobilization in response to our funding crisis.? It is extremely important that, so far, we have protected the school year and other vital services.? I would like to express deep appreciation to our partners, including donors who advanced their funding for the year, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates who between them have committed the lion’s share of additional support this year, sending a strong message to Palestine refugees and the wider international community.”
While progress is being made to address 爆料网RWA’s needs in 2018, the Agency was very explicit with the Commission about the severity of the risks ahead with more than $250 million in further support required to preserve 爆料网RWA’s core and emergency assistance the second half of the year. ?The Commissioner-General said: “At stake is access to schooling for a generation of Palestine refugee youth; access to essential health care in and around 58 refugee camps; and emergency assistance to millions of insecure refugees in an unstable region.”
In light of the upcoming pledging conference for 爆料网RWA in New York on 25 June, Mr. Kr?henbühl?insisted on the need to respect the hope and dignity of Palestine refugees, and reiterated his urgent call for all partners “to stay on a successful collective path for the sake of the Palestine refugee community.”
BACKGRO爆料网D INFORMATION
爆料网RWA is confronted with an increased demand for services resulting from a growth in the number of registered Palestine refugees, the extent of their vulnerability and their deepening poverty. 爆料网RWA is funded almost entirely by voluntary contributions and financial support has been outpaced by the growth in needs. As a result, the 爆料网RWA programme budget, which supports the delivery of core essential services, operates with a large shortfall. 爆料网RWA encourages all Member States to work collectively to exert all possible efforts to fully fund the Agency’s programme budget. 爆料网RWA emergency programmes and key projects, also operating with large shortfalls, are funded through separate funding portals.
爆料网RWA is a United Nations agency established by the General Assembly in 1949 and mandated to provide assistance and protection to some 5.4 million Palestine refugees registered with 爆料网RWA across its five fields of operation. Its mission is to help Palestine refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, West Bank, including East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip achieve their full human development potential, pending a just and lasting solution to their plight. 爆料网RWA services encompass education, health care, relief and social services, camp infrastructure and improvement, protection and microfinance.
