The world\u2019s young people need safe spaces \u2013 both physical and digital – where they can \u201cfreely express their views\u201d and \u201cpursue their dreams\u201d was the core message of United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio\u00a0Guterres to mark this year\u2019s International Youth Day.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe\u00a0hopes of the world<\/a>\u00a0rest on young people,\u201d said the ±¬ÁÏÍø chief on Friday, in advance of the official Day, which is celebrated annually on 12 August.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeace, economic dynamism, social justice, tolerance \u2013 all this and more, today and tomorrow, depends on tapping into the power of youth,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

There are currently 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 and 24 in the world \u2013 the largest youth population ever.<\/p>\n

Political instability, labour market challenges and limited space for political and civic participation have led youth to becoming increasingly more isolated, raising the need for more safe spaces where they can meet, engage and express themselves.<\/p>\n

We must invest so that young people have access to education, training and decent jobs to achieve their full potential\u00a0\u2013\u00ad\u00a0Secretary-General Guterres<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mr. Guterres pointed out that more than 400 million young women and men live amidst armed conflict or are vulnerable to organized criminal violence.<\/p>\n

Moreover, he elaborated that \u201cmillions face deprivation, harassment, bullying and other infringements of their rights.\u201d<\/p>\n

Safe spaces<\/a>\u00a0offer security and dignity while interacting. These include civic spaces to engage in governance issues; public spaces to take part in community activity such as sport\u00a0\u00a0digital spaces to interact virtually across borders; and well-planned physical spaces for diverse youth; especially those vulnerable to marginalization or violence.<\/p>\n

The\u00a02030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a>, specifically\u00a0Goal 11<\/a>, emphasizes the need for the provision of space towards inclusive and sustainable urbanization.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must invest so that young people have access to education, training and decent jobs to achieve their full potential,\u201d underscored the Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

\u201c±¬ÁÏÍø is strongly committed to listening to the voices of young people \u2013 and opening pathways for meaningful participation in decisions that affect them,\u201d he continued, announcing a new strategy to be launched in September \u201cto step up our work with and for young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIn making the world safe for young people, we make the world better for all,\u201d concluded Mr. Guterres, \u201cI wish all a happy International Youth Day!\u201d<\/p>\n

For her message for the day, Jayathma Wickramanayake, the ±¬ÁÏÍø Youth Envoy, stressed: \u201cYoung women and girls are particularly vulnerable, as are young refugees and migrants, youth living in conflict-prone or humanitarian settings, and LGBTQI young people,\u201d referring to lesbian,\u00a0gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex.<\/p>\n

Events to celebrate International Youth Day 2018 will take place all over the world to promote youth engagement and empowerment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
