  {"id":29797,"date":"2017-07-12T21:35:51","date_gmt":"2017-07-12T21:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=29797"},"modified":"2018-04-22T11:51:23","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T15:51:23","slug":"billions-around-the-world-lack-safe-water-proper-sanitation-facilities-reveals-un-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2017\/07\/billions-around-the-world-lack-safe-water-proper-sanitation-facilities-reveals-un-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Billions around the world lack safe water, proper sanitation facilities, reveals ±¬ÁÏÍø report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Some three in ten people around the world lack access to safe and readily available water at home, and almost six in ten to safely managed sanitation, a new United Nations report has warned, calling on countries to do more to fulfil these basic human needs.<\/p>\n<p>According to the World Health Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/en\/\">WHO<\/a>) and the ±¬ÁÏÍø Children&#8217;s Fund (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\">±¬ÁÏÍøICEF<\/a>) joint report,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/entity\/mediacentre\/news\/releases\/2017\/launch-version-report-jmp-water-sanitation-hygiene.pdf?ua=1\">Progress on Drinking Water, Sanitation and Hygiene: 2017 Update and Sustainable Development Goal Baselines<\/a>, many homes, healthcare facilities and schools also lack soap and water for handwashing, putting the health of all people \u2013 but especially young children \u2013 at risk for deadly diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/media\/media_96632.html\">Safe water, sanitation and hygiene at home should not be a privilege<\/a>\u00a0of only those who are rich or live in urban centres,\u201d Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, said in a news release, announcing the findings and noting that those living in rural areas are the worst affected.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of lack of these basic services, millions fall ill to diseases \u2013 that could, otherwise, have been easily prevented \u2013 such as diarrhoea which claims the lives of 361,000 children under the age of five die, every year, noted the ±¬ÁÏÍø agencies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSafe water, effective sanitation and hygiene are critical to the health of every child and every community \u2013 and thus are essential to building stronger, healthier, and more equitable societies,\u201d underscored Anthony Lake, the Executive Director of ±¬ÁÏÍøICEF.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-1 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-video fusion-youtube\" style=\"--awb-max-width:600px;--awb-max-height:350px;\"><div class=\"video-shortcode\"><div class=\"fluid-width-video-wrapper\" style=\"padding-top:58.33%;\" ><iframe title=\"YouTube video player 1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LS-iojgq-dQ?wmode=transparent&autoplay=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture;\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<h5><em>&#8216;Significant&#8217; inequalities persist<\/em><\/h5>\n<blockquote><p>Safe water, sanitation and hygiene at home should not be a privilege of only those who are rich<small>WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/small><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Good hygiene is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, cholera, dysentery, hepatitis A, and typhoid.<\/p>\n<p>However, findings in the report revealed that access to water and soap for handwashing varies immensely in the 70 countries with available data, from 15 per cent of the population in sub-Saharan Africa to 76 per cent in western Asia and northern Africa.<\/p>\n<p>These significant inequalities also put the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdgs\">SDGs<\/a>), in particular<a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/sdg6\">Goal 6<\/a>\u00a0on ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all at risk.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by the data, the two ±¬ÁÏÍø agencies also warned that in as many as 90 countries around the world, progress towards basic sanitation is too slow, \u201cmeaning they will not reach universal coverage by 2030\u201d.<\/p>\n<h5><em>In addition, hundreds of millions without even &#8216;basic&#8217;
