  {"id":2874,"date":"2015-03-23T20:48:25","date_gmt":"2015-03-23T20:48:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=2874"},"modified":"2018-04-22T12:11:09","modified_gmt":"2018-04-22T16:11:09","slug":"on-world-meteorological-day-un-chief-stresses-need-to-mitigate-climate-change-patterns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2015\/03\/on-world-meteorological-day-un-chief-stresses-need-to-mitigate-climate-change-patterns\/","title":{"rendered":"On World Meteorological Day, ±¬ÁÏÍø chief stresses need to mitigate climate change patterns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With extreme weather and changing climatic patterns taking a heavier toll on the planet, mitigating and adapting to them remains \u201camong the great tests of our time,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sg\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary-General<\/a> Ban Ki-moon said today, as he stressed the need for timely, reliable information to further strengthen resilience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of these extremes and threatening water and food security in many parts of the world,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmo.int\/worldmetday\/sites\/default\/files\/EN23.meteorologicalday2015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Ban said<\/a> in his message for World Meteorological Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last three decades, floods, storm surges, droughts and wildfires have taken a huge toll in lives and caused massive economic losses. The devastation caused by Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu and other parts of Oceania is just the latest example of how catastrophic weather extremes can be,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wmo.int\/worldmetday\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Meteorological Day<\/a> commemorates the coming into force on 23 March 1950 of the convention establishing the ±¬ÁÏÍø World Meteorological Organization (WMO). This year\u2019s theme for the Day, \u2018Climate Knowledge for Climate Action,\u2019 highlights both recent advances in climate science and the need for decisive measures to limit climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ban noted that over the last 12 months, thousands of lives have been saved around the world by improved weather forecasting, early warning systems and disaster readiness. The economic benefits of climate services such as seasonal outlooks have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars.<\/p>\n<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 hundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-overflow:visible;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last fusion-column-no-min-height\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;--awb-margin-bottom:0px;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div id=\"attachment_2884\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Barrow_Alaska_03.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2884\" class=\"wp-image-2884 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Barrow_Alaska_03-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"WMO's Global Atomosphere Watch (GAW) station in Barrow, Alaska. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WMO&#8217;s Global Atomosphere Watch (GAW) station in Barrow, Alaska.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Timely, reliable and accessible information for further decision-making and action remains critical and is the aim of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gfcs-climate.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Global Framework for Climate Services<\/a>, initiated by WMO to facilitate the use of climate information to reduce disaster risk, promote food and water security, and safeguard public health.<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with the Day, WMO released its report on the Status of the Climate in 2014, which provides details of weather extremes last year and the impacts of climate change.
