  {"id":132,"date":"2014-12-17T15:46:49","date_gmt":"2014-12-17T15:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/?p=132"},"modified":"2020-03-04T13:56:50","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T18:56:50","slug":"with-accomplishments-in-peru-the-stars-are-aligned-for-action-on-climate-change","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/blog\/2014\/12\/with-accomplishments-in-peru-the-stars-are-aligned-for-action-on-climate-change\/","title":{"rendered":"With accomplishments in Peru, \u2018the stars are aligned\u2019 for action on climate change"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>±¬ÁÏÍø Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon praised the outcome of the climate meeting that ended last Sunday in Lima, Peru, as one that advanced the effort to stem global warming on several fronts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernments built on the success of the Climate Change Summit, which I convened in a September meeting this year, and put in place the building blocks for a meaningful climate change agreement in Paris next year,\u201d he told reporters in his year-end news conference at ±¬ÁÏÍø Headquarters here.<\/p>\n<p>Those successes are likely to be expanded next year, he predicted. \u201cThe stars are aligned for the world to take historic action to transform lives and to protect the planet,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ban, who recently returned from Peru after attending the 20th Conference of the Parties, or COP20, cited the delegates\u2019 agreement on a draft negotiating text to serve as the basis for the next round of climate change talks, which are slated to begin in February in Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, he said, they provided clarity on mitigation and other commitments, which are to be included in countries\u2019 national plans of action, referred to in ±¬ÁÏÍø-speak as INDCs, or Intended Nationally Determined Contributions.
