Marine Biodiversity: Landmark Agreement Adopted<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n After nearly two decades of negotiations, \u00a0countries convened at ±¬ÁÏÍø Headquarters in New York on 19 June 2023 to adopt a historic agreement<\/a><\/span> to advance conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction. The new agreement \u201cis critical to addressing the threats facing the ocean, and to the success of ocean-related goals and targets, including the 2030 Agenda and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework,\u201d said ±¬ÁÏÍø Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres.<\/p>\n The ocean, the lungs of our planet, is in a state of emergency driven by climate change and plastic pollution causing biodiversity and habitat loss. Carbon emissions from human activities are causing ocean warming, acidification and oxygen loss. Toxic chemicals and millions of tons of plastic waste are flooding into areas beyond national jurisdiction, where large systems of ocean currents are acting as zones of accumulation for plastic pollution, known as the \u201cgarbage patches\u201d. The accumulation of such litter and plastic debris may pose a threat to diverse marine life, causing killing or injuring fish, sea turtles, seabirds and marine mammals, and making their way into the food chain and ultimately being consumed by humans.<\/p>\n More than 17 million metric tons of plastic entered the world\u2019s ocean in 2021, making up 85 per cent of marine litter, and projections are expected to double or triple each year by 2040, according to the latest\u00a0SDG report<\/a>.<\/span> According to ±¬ÁÏÍø estimates, by 2050, there could be\u00a0more plastic in the sea than fish<\/a><\/span>\u00a0unless action is taken.<\/p>\n New Agreement builds on ±¬ÁÏÍø Convention on the Law of the Sea<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n The new Agreement, which addresses marine biodiversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, also known as the BBNJ Agreement builds on the legacy of the ±¬ÁÏÍø Convention on the Law of the Sea and provides a legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in over two-thirds of the ocean. It aims at strengthening international cooperation to that end. \u00a0The implementation of the Agreement is expected to make significant contributions to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The survival of our societies and our shared planet depends on a more sustainable world.<\/strong><\/span><\/p> It\u2019s a bit of a juggling act. Three different balls must be kept in the air at once: economic growth, social inclusion, and environmental protection. If one or two fall to the ground, the act is over. An economy might grow rapidly, for instance \u2013 but only for so long if most people remain poor and all the natural resources are used up.<\/p> Where development is sustainable, everyone has access to decent work, quality health care and education. Natural resource use avoids pollution and permanent losses to the environment. Public policy choices ensure that no one is left behind due to disadvantages or discrimination.<\/p> Making the Right Choices Now<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p> If you want to understand why sustainable development is so important in real-world terms, just look around. On average globally, people live longer lives with higher incomes. But a lot of development is unsustainable.<\/em> It has taken us to climate change. Environmental destruction. Conflict. Poverty and hunger. Vast inequalities and social instability.<\/p> Unsustainable development happens when people pursue immediate rewards without thinking about harms to other people or the planet. Often, short-term gains are overshadowed by longer-term costs. That\u2019s the case when someone cuts down an entire forest to turn a quick profit \u2013 even if an ecosystem collapses, endangered species die off and local communities are left at permanent risk of devastating floods.<\/p> A blueprint for our common future<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p> In 2015, ±¬ÁÏÍø Member States translated their vision of sustainable development into a blueprint for achieving it: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development<\/a><\/span>. Its 17 Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a> \u2014with ambitious targets to achieve by 2030\u2014 cover the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economy, social development and the environment.<\/p> However, halfway to our 2030 deadline, the climate crisis, a weak global economy, conflicts and the lingering impact of COVID-19 have put the Goals in jeopardy.<\/p> According to the ±¬ÁÏÍø SDGs Report 2023: Special Edition<\/a><\/span>, the number of people living in extreme poverty in 2020 rose to 724 million, and now gender equality is some 300 years away.\u00a0 The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)<\/a><\/span> warns that without more robust policies across all sectors, the world is likely to surpass the critical 1.5\u00b0C tipping point by 2035.<\/p> It is not too late to reset efforts to reach them, however. To advance the sustainable development agenda, governments are integrating the Goals into national plans<\/span><\/a>. However, a fundamental shift is needed to put the world on a better path. And with seven years left to achieve the 2030 Agenda, it is needed now.<\/p> The SDG Summit<\/span><\/a>, to be held at ±¬ÁÏÍø headquarters on 18-19 September 2023, will be a defining moment for world leaders to renew their commitments and deliver the breakthroughs that our world desperately needs. The Summit will be an opportunity to review progress and gaps in achieving the Goals and will seek to provide high-level political guidance on transformative, accelerated actions to reach the Goals by their 2030 endpoint.<\/p> Anyone can act<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p> It is not only up to our world leaders. Every person can benefit from a more prosperous, inclusive and resilient world. We can all do something about it, regardless of whether we are in a government or civil society, run a business or a home, are in school or out of it.<\/p> While governments set policies to steer sustainable development, and both the public and private sectors have to finance the major shifts<\/a> <\/span>it requires, individual decisions add up fast.
