Despite unprecedented global social progress in recent years, social and economic inequalities persist.? As much as 40 per cent of the world’s population do not have access to education in a language they speak or understand. Children belonging to ethnic minorities and those with disabilities are much less likely to complete primary and secondary education. With its pledge to leave no one behind, the Sustainable Development Goals recognize that development cannot be sustainable if it is not inclusive.? The 2016 Report on the World Social Situation, with the theme “Leaving No One Behind – The Imperative of Inclusive Development,” examines the social, economic and political disadvantages that some groups of the population face, and makes policy recommendations to address the barriers that limit participation and access to opportunities.
