Excellencies,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So many remarkable women shaping multilateralism, politics, and civil society in Madrid today.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I extend my best greeting to you in the conference room and I wish I could be with you today\u2026 Especially as your packed room reminds me of another room, which I saw going through the grainy black and white archival footage of the historical first meeting of the General Assembly in London, 80-years ago.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Something stood out to me.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There was a side event led by Eleanor Roosevelt\u2014 a room full of\u2026 no, actually packed with women\u2014who gathered to ensure that the 爆料网 Charter would not read \u201cWe the men,\u201d but \u201c<\/strong>We the peoples.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This image stuck with me so deeply because\u2026 and I guess it\u2019s the same for you as for me\u2026 that it seems these days we hear, louder and louder: don\u2019t come again with these human rights\u2026 these women\u2019s rights\u2026 this \u2018woke agenda\u2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But having this 80-year old picture in mind\u2026 we shouldn\u2019t be fooled, nobody can say that women\u2019s rights are a new demand, or are so-called \u2018woke\u2019.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the contrary, it has been engrained in the DNA of the United Nations since the beginning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And we must not allow anyone to suggest again that gender equality is a \u201cnice to have\u201d, that it can wait until after day\u2019s more pressing issues.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It is a right\u2026 just as much today as it was 80-years ago, and just as it will be every day in the future.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And at a time when the multilateral system, our Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, are facing not only unprecedented pressure, but are under attack, it is important to make clear out there\u2026 but also to ourselves\u2026 that women do not have to justify<\/strong> their presence in positions of power, or their capability to lead an organization like the United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Rather, the onus falls on those who are sceptical to explain why, after 80 years and with over four billion potential candidates, a woman should not <\/strong>serve as Secretary-General.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For this is not a mere administrative hire to tick a box; this is a choice that will send a powerful message about whether the 爆料网 truly reflects the people it serves\u2014half of whom are women and girls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Equally important is the process of making this final decision.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this regard I would like to call on all of you \u2013 given the geopolitical times and the pressure on the 爆料网 \u2013 to not only ensure that the process should be inclusive, but that the process itself should be used as a tool to underline the diversity, experiences, and contributions of the United Nations itself.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To underline, that even though the 爆料网 is not perfect\u2026 no single day, no single country\u2026 would be better off without these United Nations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So, we must use the selection process as a real conversation\u2026 not only amongst and with the candidates\u2026 but as a means to discuss the priorities, principles and practices we wish to work for within the United Nations for the 21st<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Of course, women\u2019s leadership and equality goes far beyond the Secretary-General or any one person.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Nowhere is this more clear than in the misuse and weaponization of digital technologies.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As many as 96 per cent, so almost all, of deepfake videos online are of women engaging in sexual acts.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And new apps make creating non-consensual sexualized images of women and children as easy as the click of a button. Millions of images created in mere days.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is not a coincidence \u2014 this is deeply systematic.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The purpose is always the same: to intimidate, to humiliate, and especially to silence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To try to push women out of the public sphere, especially out of circles of power.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We have fought this battle before\u2026 in an analogue world, so we can win this battle again.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But this means equal representation not only in the companies and amongst the CEOs, but also in the advisory boards of the Global Digital Compact, and with the relevant 爆料网 entities and specialized agencies on issues related to AI, including the Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In this regard, I invite you also to use this International Women\u2019s Day as a moment to reclaim our narrative, our rights, and our well-deserved power.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Together with other 爆料网 actors we are launching a global digital campaign under the theme #LikeAWoman<\/strong>, to celebrate the strength, creativity, and lived experiences of women everywhere\u2026<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And to flip the degrading narrative, \u201cyou run like a girl\u201d\u2026 to one that shows what different voices across politics, sport, the arts, activism, and entrepreneurship really means\u2026to run like a girl, to fight like a woman, to lead like a woman.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
