±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to undertake official visit to the Republic of Namibia<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York, 18 June 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Windhoek, Republic of Namibia, from 18 to 21 June.<\/p>\n

In Windhoek, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Nangolo Mbumba, President of the Republic of Namibia, as well as hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Ms. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Vice-President, and H.E. Mr. Peya Mushelenga, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation.<\/p>\n

Importantly, the PGA will address a joint session of the Parliament, becoming the first-ever President of the ±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly to do so. The PGA will use this address as an opportunity to emphasize the role of Namibia and the wider African continent in strengthening multilateralism and international cooperation.<\/p>\n

He will particularly underline the significance of the upcoming Summit of the Future in September 2024, which is viewed as a pivotal moment to strengthen multilateralism and international cooperation; the Summit is a process in which Namibia, through its Permanent Representative in New York, alongside the Permanent Representative of Germany as co-facilitators, are investing incredible effort to secure an impactful and transformative outcome.<\/p>\n

The PGA also plans to meet with Ms. Hopolang Phororo, ±¬ÁÏÍø Resident Coordinator in Namibia, in conjunction with a roundtable discussion with the ±¬ÁÏÍø Country Team to appreciate firsthand the work done by the United Nations system organizations on the ground.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the PGA will address a roundtable discussion on debt sustainability, organized by the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises; deliver a public lecture, as part of the Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab lecture series; and also visit the Heroes Acre, a war memorial opened in 2002.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the PGA will interact with representatives of the Namibia Shack Dwellers Federation, and pay a visit to an Early Childhood Development Centre managed by the City of Windhoek, indicative of his vision of taking the United Nations to the peoples.<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, an Adviser on Sustainable Development, and his Team Lead for Communications, Media, Advocacy, and Speechwriting.<\/p>\n

Travel costs for the visit are covered by the Government of Namibia, the United Nations Regular Budget and the OPGA Trust Fund.<\/p>\n

±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly President Dennis Francis to attend the 67th<\/sup> <\/strong>session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria,<\/strong> and the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan<\/strong><\/p>

New York, 12 March 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency Mr. Dennis Francis, will undertake official travel to Vienna, Austria from 13 to 14 March 2024, and to Baku, Azerbaijan from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

In Vienna<\/strong>, the PGA will attend the opening of the 67th<\/sup> session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).\u00a0<\/p>

The PGA will highlight the role of the CND as policymaking body of the ±¬ÁÏÍø system with prime responsibility for drug-related matters. He also will underline the need to address the emergence of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and the societal impacts of this ever-growing crisis.<\/p>

While in Vienna, the PGA will hold separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Alexander Schallenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria; and H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council of Austria.<\/p>

Furthermore, he will also hold separate meetings with H.E. Mr. Philbert Abaka Johnson, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the ±¬ÁÏÍøOV, Chair of the 67th<\/sup> session of the CND; H.E. Mr. Ivo \u0160ramek, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Czechia to the ±¬ÁÏÍøOV, Chair of the 33rd<\/sup> session of the CCPCJ; Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of ±¬ÁÏÍøOV and Executive Director of ±¬ÁÏÍøODC; Mr. Gerd Mueller, Director General of ±¬ÁÏÍøIDO; and Mr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of CTBTO.<\/p>

The PGA will also use the opportunity of his visit to deliver a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the oldest of its kind in the world, to engage academia and civil society on the work of the United Nations and the General Assembly.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Vienna includes his Deputy Chef de Cabinet, a Senior Political Affairs Adviser as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

From Vienna, the President of the General Assembly will travel to Baku<\/strong>, Azerbaijan, to attend the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

The PGA will deliver a special address on the Forum\u2019s theme \u2018Fixing a Fractured World\u2019<\/em>, emphasizing the need for unity, solidarity, dialogue, and diplomacy to address ongoing geopolitical tensions; and with a view to restore the multilateral system as well as international cooperation.<\/p>

He will also participate in a panel discussion on the objectives that can be set for the 2024 ±¬ÁÏÍø Climate Change Conference (±¬ÁÏÍøFCCC, COP29)<\/strong> to be held in Baku at the end of 2024.<\/p>

During his official visit to Azerbaijan, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; and also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Elnur Soltanov, Chief Executive Officer of the COP29 Presidency.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Baku includes his Chef de Cabinet, a Special Adviser on the Summit of the Future, a Deputy Team Leader of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Team, as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

Travel costs to Vienna and to Baku are covered by the OPGA\u2019s Trust Fund and the Republic of Azerbaijan, respectively.<\/p>
