±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, to undertake official visit to Addis Ababa, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia<\/strong><\/p>\n

New York, 15 June 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency, Mr. Dennis Francis, will travel to Addis Ababa, the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, from 15 to 18 June 2024.<\/p>\n

Whilst in Addis Ababa, the PGA will hold a bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Taye Atske-Selassie Amde, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, as host country to African Union and United Nations system. He will use this meeting as an opportunity to learn about the developments in the country and the region.<\/p>\n

The PGA will also pay a visit to the Africa Union and hold bilateral discussions with H.E. Dr Monique Nsanzabaganwa, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission. This will be an opportunity for the PGA to reinforce partnership between the African Union and the United Nations, emphasizing on the important role of regional organizations.<\/p>\n

While in Ethiopia, the PGA is expected to visit the Renovation Site of the Africa Hall, founding place of the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) and one of Addis Ababa’s landmarks serving as the permanent headquarters of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (±¬ÁÏÍøECA). He will receive updates on the multi-year renovation project, that was long approved by the General Assembly and is funded through the Regular Budget.<\/p>\n

PGA will also hold bilateral meetings with Mr. Claver Gatete, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the ±¬ÁÏÍøECA to appreciate the role of the Commission in rendering sustainable development at regional level. He will also engage with Ms. Hanna Serwaa Tetteh, Secretary-General\u2019s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, and other senior officials of the United Nations Country Team to learn firsthand about the work the on the ground on peace and security, and socio-economic development.<\/p>\n

Throughout his engagements, the PGA will underscore the Development of Africa as one of the strategic priorities of the United Nations. He will therefore seek to appreciate African countries\u2019 progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in conjunction with the African Union\u2019s Vision 2063.<\/p>\n

In doing so, PGA will also seek to learn more about the key challenges and concerns for the region, including conflict and instability, debt and finance, human rights, and the ongoing impacts of climate change, highlighting the upcoming Summit of the Future as an opportunity for Africa\u2019s leadership to ensure that a reinvigorated multilateral system delivers better for the region.<\/p>\n

The PGA\u2019s delegation includes his Chef de Cabinet, Special Assistant to the CDC, CSOs and Other Major Stakeholders Liaison officer, and the Team Lead for Communication, Media, Advocacy and Speechwriting.<\/p>\n

Travel costs for the visit are covered by the OPGA\u2019s Trust Fund and the United Nations Regular Budget.<\/p>\n

±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly President Dennis Francis to attend the 67th<\/sup> <\/strong>session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs in Vienna, Austria,<\/strong> and the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum in Baku, Azerbaijan<\/strong><\/p>

New York, 12 March 2024 <\/strong><\/em>\u2013 The President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA), His Excellency Mr. Dennis Francis, will undertake official travel to Vienna, Austria from 13 to 14 March 2024, and to Baku, Azerbaijan from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

In Vienna<\/strong>, the PGA will attend the opening of the 67th<\/sup> session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).\u00a0<\/p>

The PGA will highlight the role of the CND as policymaking body of the ±¬ÁÏÍø system with prime responsibility for drug-related matters. He also will underline the need to address the emergence of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and the societal impacts of this ever-growing crisis.<\/p>

While in Vienna, the PGA will hold separate bilateral meetings with H.E. Mr. Alexander Schallenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Austria; and H.E. Mr. Wolfgang Sobotka, President of the National Council of Austria.<\/p>

Furthermore, he will also hold separate meetings with H.E. Mr. Philbert Abaka Johnson, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Ghana to the ±¬ÁÏÍøOV, Chair of the 67th<\/sup> session of the CND; H.E. Mr. Ivo \u0160ramek, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of Czechia to the ±¬ÁÏÍøOV, Chair of the 33rd<\/sup> session of the CCPCJ; Ms. Ghada Waly, Director-General of ±¬ÁÏÍøOV and Executive Director of ±¬ÁÏÍøODC; Mr. Gerd Mueller, Director General of ±¬ÁÏÍøIDO; and Mr. Robert Floyd, Executive Secretary of CTBTO.<\/p>

The PGA will also use the opportunity of his visit to deliver a lecture at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, the oldest of its kind in the world, to engage academia and civil society on the work of the United Nations and the General Assembly.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Vienna includes his Deputy Chef de Cabinet, a Senior Political Affairs Adviser as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

From Vienna, the President of the General Assembly will travel to Baku<\/strong>, Azerbaijan, to attend the 11th<\/sup> Global Baku Forum from 15 to 16 March 2024.<\/p>

The PGA will deliver a special address on the Forum\u2019s theme \u2018Fixing a Fractured World\u2019<\/em>, emphasizing the need for unity, solidarity, dialogue, and diplomacy to address ongoing geopolitical tensions; and with a view to restore the multilateral system as well as international cooperation.<\/p>

He will also participate in a panel discussion on the objectives that can be set for the 2024 ±¬ÁÏÍø Climate Change Conference (±¬ÁÏÍøFCCC, COP29)<\/strong> to be held in Baku at the end of 2024.<\/p>

During his official visit to Azerbaijan, the PGA will pay a courtesy call on H.E. Mr. Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan; and also hold bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Mr. Jeyhun Bayramov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Mr. Elnur Soltanov, Chief Executive Officer of the COP29 Presidency.<\/p>

The PGA\u2019s delegation to Baku includes his Chef de Cabinet, a Special Adviser on the Summit of the Future, a Deputy Team Leader of the Political Affairs, Peace and Security Team, as well as a Communications Adviser.<\/p>

Travel costs to Vienna and to Baku are covered by the OPGA\u2019s Trust Fund and the Republic of Azerbaijan, respectively.<\/p>
