at the 18th<\/sup>\u00a0plenary meeting of the General Assembly<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

Joint Debate on Agenda Item 65(a) \u201cNew Partnership for Africa\u2019s Development: progress in implementation and international support\u201d, and Item 65(b) \u201cCauses of conflict and the promotion of durable peace and sustainable development in Africa\u201d<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n

Distinguished Delegates,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

Africa \u2013 a cradle of ancient human civilization \u2013 is also a continent of great promise for peace, human rights, prosperity, and development in the 21st<\/sup>\u00a0century.<\/p>\n

\n

If given the opportunity and well supported by the international community, the continent would be indeed\u00a0unstoppable<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 with its great potential not only for a strong take- off, but to\u00a0rise<\/b>.<\/p>\n

\n

That promise, however, requires us to address the urgent challenges to get the continent back on track to achieve the 2030 and 2063 Agendas.<\/p>\n

\n

Africa is facing cascading and overlapping challenges, and\u00a0I commend the emphasis placed on development financing, energy, and food security in the Secretary-General\u2019s report on the New Partnership for Africa\u2019s Development (NEPAD).<\/p>\n

\n

While Africa is rich in\u00a0financial resources<\/b>, it is experiencing such a severe debt crisis that it is losing\u00a0500 to 600 billion US dollars annually<\/b>.<\/p>\n

\n

This is more than the GDP of 35 African countries combined.<\/p>\n

\n

Therefore, reforming our international financial architecture\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0achieving debt sustainability<\/b>\u00a0must be our top priority.<\/p>\n

\n

For a continent so rich in energy resources, half the African population struggles to access energy, particularly electricity.<\/p>\n

\n

We must intensify our efforts on ensuring affordable, clean, and sustainable energy across the continent in line with SDG 7.<\/p>\n

\n

And while Africa has an extraordinarily rich endowment of\u00a0natural resources,\u00a0<\/b>almost 58 per cent of its population suffers from moderate or severe food insecurity \u2013 almost\u00a0double<\/b>\u00a0the world average.<\/p>\n

\n

We will not be successful in attaining\u00a0full\u00a0<\/b>sustainable development in Africa, if we do not prioritise implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 2, that is, end hunger and achieve food security.<\/p>\n

\n

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

Africa is home to the world\u2019s youngest population, with 60% of its people under the age of 25.<\/p>\n

\n

I applaud the African leaders and the AU for continuing to exert all efforts to turn this demographic dividend into reality, by making meaningful investment in youth initiatives.<\/p>\n

\n

But truth be told, their futures are obscured by\u00a0political instability and conflicts,\u00a0<\/b>including armed violence, extremism, and terrorist attacks, with devastating consequences for peace and prosperity.<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

The African continent needs an enabling environment to achieve\u00a0peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability<\/b>, and to harness its own resources and capacities for development.<\/p>\n

\n

This is why it is so critical that we have an international financial system that addresses historical injustices; and that promotes an open, inclusive and fair global economy that better represents African voices in its governance.<\/p>\n

\n

Just a few weeks ago, the 78th<\/sup>\u00a0Session\u2019s General Debate and the\u00a0SDG Summit<\/b>\u00a0provided opportunities to directly hear African voices on how to pursue economic recovery and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

\n

The ongoing discussions on the\u00a0Global Digital Compact<\/b>, the\u00a0New Agenda for Peace<\/b>, and the\u00a0Summit of the Future<\/b>\u00a0offer platforms to highlight peace and development efforts in Africa, through a participatory effort and reinforced multilateralism.<\/p>\n

\n

For that to happen, we need to re-dedicate ourselves to the basic tenets that must guide our work in this pursuit \u2013 the respect for international law, including for the 爆料网 Charter, and in that regard, the critical importance of human rights law.<\/s><\/p>\n

\n

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

We\u00a0know<\/b>\u00a0that poverty and economic inequalities are a trigger of conflict.<\/p>\n

\n

We must strive to promote economic opportunities, access to education \u2013 especially for girls \u2013 and job creation, particularly for Africa\u2019s youth,\u00a0women, and marginalized communities.<\/p>\n

\n

We must support African countries to\u00a0integrate conflict prevention and peacebuilding into sustainable development efforts \u2013 recognizing that both are intrinsically intertwined.<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

We must also provide robust humanitarian and development assistance\u00a0to conflict-affected countries and regions in Africa to save lives and to help rebuild communities.<\/p>\n

\n

I therefore call on all Member States to forge strong international partnership to address common challenges in Africa, aligning our efforts with those of the African Union and other regional organizations.<\/p>\n

\n

I also call on development partners, stakeholders, and the private sector to scale up sustainable investment in Africa\u2019s development to make sure\u00a0<\/b>that\u00a0no country on the continent is left behind.<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>\n

\n

The\u00a02063 Agenda: The Africa We Want\u00a0<\/b>is a blueprint to transform Africa into the peaceful, prosperous, progressive, and sustainable global powerhouse it is meant to be.<\/p>\n

\n

Let us not forget that Africa\u2019s development is inextricably linked to\u00a0global<\/b>\u00a0peace and prosperity.<\/p>\n

\n

The recent\u00a0uncontrollable spate of coups<\/b>\u00a0in the continent takes the continent decades back and does not augur well with the quest for sustaining peace and silencing the guns in Africa.<\/p>\n

\n

We owe it to the continent to continue to ensure that the special\u00a0needs of Africa<\/b>\u00a0and its development remains at the centre of our strategic frameworks throughout the United Nations system organizations. That is why I have set myself the strategic objective of prioritizing the LDC\u2019s, LLDC\u2019s and the SIDS during my presidency, bearing in mind that out of the 46 LDC\u2019s 33 are in Africa. It is these countries in special situations, particularly the LDC\u2019s that are most in need of our urgent help and support to achieve the SDG\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\n

Together, we can pave the way for durable\u00a0peace,<\/b>\u00a0prosperity, demonstrable progress,\u00a0<\/b>and sustainable development for all the people in Africa. Let us commit in earnest, to devoting ourselves to that task.<\/p>\n

the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons<\/span><\/b><\/p>

Excellencies,<\/i><\/p>

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/i><\/p>

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all delegations for their active participation in this High-Level Meeting.<\/p>

Today, we have heard a resounding call for nuclear disarmament, a moral imperative that\u00a0cannot<\/b>\u00a0be ignored.<\/p>

We cannot let these horrendous weapons jeopardize life on our planet.<\/p>

I earnestly urge delegations and state leaders to wield their authority and expansive influence to resoundingly amplify the message of nuclear risk.<\/p>

Let us rally for decisive action in the pursuit of global peace and harmony.<\/p>

Let us commit to supporting every effort to transform nuclear disarmament into a reality.<\/p>

Together, we can secure a safer, more peaceful world for all, with all that this implies for global prosperity.<\/p>
