Mandate<\/strong><\/p>\n

The President of the General Assembly will hold a high-level debate on the theme \u201cCrime Prevention and<\/strong>
Sustainable Development through Sports\u201d<\/strong> in cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and<\/a>
Crime and with the involvement of relevant stakeholders, pursuant to General Assembly resolution 78\/229
of 19 December 2023, entitled \u201cStrengthening the United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice
programme, in particular its technical cooperation capacity\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the mandate, summary of the discussion will be transmitted to the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and to all Member States.<\/p>\n

“Crime Prevention<\/em>\u00a0comprises strategies and measures that seek to reduce the risk of crimes occurring, and their potential harmful effects on individuals and society, including fear of crime, by intervening to influence their multiple causes.”\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>the Prevention of Crime ECOSOC Resolution 2002\/13, Annex<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

Well-planned crime prevention strategies not only prevent crime and victimization, but also contribute to sustainable development. Prevention is key to achieving\u00a0Sustainable Development Goal 16<\/a>\u00a0in terms of reducing violence, crime and injustice, as well as for\u00a0creating safe and resilient cities<\/a>\u00a0(SDG 11) and for\u00a0eliminating all form of violence against women and girls<\/a>\u00a0(SDG 5).<\/p>\n
