Thank you much, Madam President,<\/span><\/p>\n

Excellencies,<\/span><\/p>\n

Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders of today,<\/span><\/p>\n

Leaders of tomorrow,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Welcome to this Chamber, welcome to the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As young people today, you are warriors. We regard you as warriors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You are making your mark \u2013 as we heard from the ECOSOC President \u2013 in a world overcome by complex, interlinked crises, that have been supercharged by the COVID pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You are fighting for your lives, your families, your communities, and our planet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It is the way of the warrior to fight superior odds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You are fighting those odds with little more than your voice, your phones, your social media accounts and activities, and your enthusiasm.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And yet, despite it all \u2013 you are winning.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You are winning already by being here, being involved, and being heard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And I hope \u2013 being listened to.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To give you a few examples of how your engagement is making a difference:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Just last month, the ±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly passed by consensus a resolution\u00a0requesting the International Court of Justice to issue an Advisory Opinion on the legal obligations regarding climate change.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been a long battle for more than 10 years, and the last four years, turned to be decisive.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This was a historic moment inspired by young law students in the Pacific who, in 2019, raised their concerns to the attention of Vanuatu\u2019s Government. The rest is history.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are other examples.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Ghana, young climate activist Joshua Amponsem founded\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It led to the first community-led zero waste program in West Africa \u2013 the Sustainable Community Project.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project has been replicated across municipalities, provided jobs to more than 100 people and restored dignity to the work of informal waste collectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is proof that you can be drivers of real transformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That your commitment, your thoughts and innovations may prove to be game-changing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Young people\u2019s ideas are critical because our 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is badly off-track.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a perfect opportunity to come up with some game-changing solutions on several SDGs that will be under review at our High-level Political Forum in July, as we heard from the President of the ECOSOC.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We just concluded the ±¬ÁÏÍø Water Conference. We emerged with nine game-changing ideas and a Water Action Agenda containing more than 700 voluntary commitments from Governments.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many of these would not have been born and accepted without the inquisitive and innovative minds of young people, without your dedication<\/span>, your energy, your thirst to do things. And now we have them, and now we\u2019re going to change the course of events. Thank you very much.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dear Friends,<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We have reached tipping points.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Points of no return.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And, in a sense, the moment of truth has come. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

We cannot accept any more excuses for delaying the implementation of the pledges my generation has made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I cannot see anything that would be more urgent than to reverse at least some of the human-induced damage to our natural resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To our planet, the only home we have.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Keep this in mind \u2013 educate yourselves and hold leaders accountable for promises made.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You will soon have a good partner on your side.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The new ±¬ÁÏÍø Youth Office is taking shape.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And once established, this will guarantee that your voices are systematically integrated across the United Nations system.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now is the time to share your perspectives.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because now is the time to\u00a0<\/span>transform our practices, the way we live and the way we think about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the first generation of feeling the really, really very bad shape of climate, water, biodiversity. And we are the last generation that can still do something about it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have to tell you, it will not be easy progress or smooth sailing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But, if you feel stuck, remember what Jordin Sparks sang, \u201cwe live and we learn to take one step at a time\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n
