Solutions through solidarity, sustainability and science.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We are thinking of solutions that are so transformative that they are almost an upheaval of the current state of affairs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You know first-hand that the pandemic disrupted education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You who grew up in the virtual realm \u2013 the so-called \u201cdigital natives\u201d \u2013 went online. Incorporated digital technologies in your education \u2013 not always by choice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Digital and basic scientific literacy are new elements young people can add to their toolkit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But not everyone was able to do that. We saw a gap in <em>access <\/em>to technology.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Where does that leave us?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We have the Sustainable Development Goals. There are 17 of them, and one is about education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The second \u201cSDG Summit\u201d is exactly a year ahead of us.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It coincides with the half-way point to implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It is vital that you are an active part of this process.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can take action now, to help preserve your future. Because if you don\u2019t take action now, there won\u2019t be a future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, to quote Bob Marley: \u201c<em>Come together and make it work. We can make it work.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Young leaders,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The climate emergency is the most ominous challenge we face today.\u00a0 And you will be forced to live with the decisions that we make today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Climate action will not shift without education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Education develops people\u2019s understanding of the climate crisis. It empowers them with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to react.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The international community understands the importance of education in addressing climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Whether we talk about the ±¬ÁÏÍøFCCC, a working group within the ±¬ÁÏÍø, or an international treaty like the Paris Agreement \u2013 they all mention the importance of climate education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There is also the Action for Climate Empowerment Agenda and ±¬ÁÏÍøESCO\u2019s Education for Sustainable Development Programme.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>All of these tell us that <em>we <\/em>have to teach <em>you<\/em> about climate change.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So that <em>you <\/em>can teach <em>us<\/em> about how to galvanize momentum for climate action. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important that everyone is included in this movement to protect the planet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That means making sure that girls have the same opportunities to learn, as boys.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although much progress has been made, large gender gaps still exist in education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Women are particularly under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics education \u2013 what is known as STEM education.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a result, there are fewer of them in STEM careers, while these are seen as the jobs of the future: driving innovation, social wellbeing, inclusive growth and sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This gender disparity is alarming. We therefore need a system-wide transformation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We must urgently address this imbalance in education, by ensuring gender consistently factors in to our solutions to the crises we are facing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ladies and Gentlemen,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In our mission to transform education for the better, I invite you all to help us develop alternative learning systems and methods that will equip young people faster than traditional school systems.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I call you, the young leaders to \u201clean in\u201d, become agents of change, bring proposals to the table \u2013 regardless of how provocative they may seem.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I invite and encourage you to join us at decision-making tables;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And to never forget the words of Albert Schweitzer: <em>\u201cYou are as young as your hopes, and as old as your doubts. As young as your confidence, as old as your fears.
