±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly, Inter-Parliamentary Union open annual hearing in GA Hall<\/strong><\/p>\n 17 February \u2013 ±¬ÁÏÍø co-hosts its largest in-person gathering since the September High-Level Week, with hundreds of Parliamentarians from around the world attending the 2022 Parliamentary Hearing, a joint initiative between the President of the General Assembly and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), on the theme of \u201cBuilding political support and inclusive responses to sustainable recovery\u201d on 17 and 18 February.<\/p>\n Around 200 Members of Parliament, Speakers, advisers, and related officials from 65 Member States are expected to participate in the two-day event, which for the first time, is being held in the General Assembly Hall.<\/p>\n Every year the President of the General Assembly and the IPU organize a parliamentary hearing to mainstream global commitments into the day-to-day work of national parliaments and support parliaments in their vital role of holding governments to account in implementing multilateral agreements.<\/p>\n Highlighting the shared objectives of the ±¬ÁÏÍø and the IPU in the context of multilateralism and global cooperation, the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, said: \u201cParliaments are the platform through which ±¬ÁÏÍø resolutions can be turned into national legislation. And national parliaments can be the mechanism through which local concerns can be conveyed to the ±¬ÁÏÍø and deliberated by the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n This synergy is particularly important in a global crisis, such as the pandemic, or as the world faces global challenges emerging from poverty or climate change.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is where parliaments and the ±¬ÁÏÍø must be in lockstep,\u201d President Shahid added.<\/p>\n Duarte Pacheco, IPU President said: \u201cThis Parliamentary Hearing is an example of how the United Nations must engage with parliaments and vice-versa for global problems. The Covid pandemic is just the latest instance of a global problem that knows no borders. Climate change. An unstable global economy. The systemic exclusion of women, youth and other groups. There are so many problems we face today that can only be resolved effectively by combining actions nationally and globally \u2013 and parliaments are the lynchpin for that action.\u201d<\/p>\n This year\u2019s Parliamentary Hearing will drive home to governments, parliaments and the United Nations community a critical perspective on key actions to build economies that work for all, societies that bring people together, and environments that are sustainable for generations to come. Advancing gender equality will permeate the two-day discussion.<\/p>\n The hearing will also serve as a reflection on the ±¬ÁÏÍø Secretary General\u2019s report on Our Common Agenda.<\/p>\n Since 2002, IPU has had Permanent Observer Status with the ±¬ÁÏÍø. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, concluded his 4-day official visit to the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.<\/p> The PGA delivered remarks at the formal Opening of the COP26, where he emphasized that humanity had the capacity to tackle the climate crisis but lacked the will to deliver. The PGA also relayed messages from the General Assembly High-Level Dialogue on Delivering Climate Action which took place on 26th<\/sup>\u00a0Oct at the ±¬ÁÏÍø Headquarters in New York. At the event, Member States called for reliable access to finance, technology transfer, and support for adaptation.<\/p> On day 2 of COP26, the PGA joined other world leaders at the World Leaders Summit. The President spoke with Heads of State and Government, and Ministers, from a number of countries, including Antigua and Barbuda, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, Barbados, Brunei, Canada, Comoros, Egypt, Fiji, Guinea Bissau, India, Kuwait, Malawi, Maldives, Namibia, Palau, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, the UAE, Zimbabwe, as well as the European Commission.<\/p> The President held bilateral discussions with H.E. Lazarus Chakwera, President of Malawi (Chair of LDC Group); Germany\u2019s State Secretary, Jochen Flasbarth; H.E. Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and Special Envoy for Climate; Lord Karan Bilimoria, Chancellor, University of Birmingham; Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the UK\u2019s Minister of State (South Asia, United Nations and the Commonwealth); Seve Paeniu, Minister of Finance and Climate Change of Tuvalu; Henry Puna, Secretary-General of the Pacific Island Forum;\u00a0Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the ±¬ÁÏÍøFCCC; and Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.<\/p> In addition, the President held a roundtable discussion with YO±¬ÁÏÍøGO, the youth constituency of the ±¬ÁÏÍøFCCC; met with youth representatives from both UAE and the Maldives; and held a special discussion with women scientists of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to discuss the obstacles to women and girl\u2019s participation in climate science and policy.<\/p> On day 3, The President spoke at the AOSIS Leaders Dialogue on the morning of the 2 November, where he joined Small Island States in reiterating the need for reliable and adequate climate finance and support to adaptation.<\/p> President Shahid welcomed the announcement on an end to deforestation by 2030. Likewise, the President welcomed the\u00a0<\/strong>pledge to reduce methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030, noting that these were constructive and concrete steps to maintain the 1.5 target.<\/p> President Shahid spoke with several media outlets during his visit, including Deutsche Welle, Al-Jazeera, Bloomberg, Sky News Arabia, Public Service Media of Maldives, Doordharshan News, and CNBC. The President also participated in the \u2018Net Zero World\u2019 documentary.<\/p> Prior to departure, the President toured the Green Zone \u2013 the public venue of COP26 \u2013 and met with Alman, a young boy from the Maldives who had created a viral video on the need for climate action.<\/p> Commenting on the state of negotiations and COP26, President Shahid noted:<\/p> \u201cI leave Glasgow with cautious optimism; COP26 needs to reignite hope for people everywhere by recommitting to 1.5, by fleshing out details on how we will get there. The people of the world sense the urgency, now they need to know we have a clear pathway and timeline. I believe we are seeing that come together.
