Statement by H.E. Volkan Bozkir, President of the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly
1 October 2020
Excellencies,
In 1995, the nations of the world adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The most comprehensive and transformative global agenda, for the achievement of gender equality.
No doubt, we have made significant progress. Yet no country can claim to have achieved gender parity, and the current crisis threatens to erode hard-earned gains.
Today¡¯s discussion has shown that, we have a long way to go; while it has also shown that, we are committed to accelerating the realization of gender equality.
I thank all Member States, for their interventions today, outlining their renewed commitment to the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.
And I urge you, to utilize the convening power of the General Assembly, to combat these threats to society.
It is my ardent hope that, the women of the world, will reclaim their voice and their power. That they are free from denigration, from abuse, from oppression.
For generations, women have endured undue discrimination, marginalisation, and hardship. We must ensure that no woman feels the need, to justify her presence. And we must ensure that, no woman is under threat, underpaid, or underestimated, for the work she carries out. No one should be limited by a glass ceiling, or held down by a Velcro floor.
Today I am pleased to see that, we all agree on recognizing the enduring resilience of women around the world.
But our words, must be matched by our deeds.
It is my ardent hope that, the women of the world, will reclaim their voice and their power. That they are free from denigration, from abuse, from oppression.
That they feel safe to be themselves in every setting.
±¬ÁÏÍø is with the women of the world at every step of the way.
Today¡¯s conversation, is one step together in our journey towards equality. ?
Thank you very much for this wonderful meeting we had today.
