z_index_tablet=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\"><strong>Media Advisory<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>±¬ÁÏÍø gathering to call for a stronger multilateral approach to deliver on the Beijing Platform for Action \u2013 the blueprint for advancing gender equality<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em><strong>Robust and urgent actions must bring transformative change to women and girls\u2019 empowerment<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Tuesday 21 July 2020<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>10:00 am to 5:00 pm EDT<\/strong><br \/><strong>\u00a0Live-streamed at\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=33cf89da7ade3a85156c5eda4&amp;id=b0513c7802&amp;e=bff69439d6\"><strong>http:\/\/webtv.un.org<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Member states and observers, civil society organisations, gender equality leaders, CEOs, and heads of academia will gather virtually on 21 July 2020 in a multi-stakeholder hearing to bolster priority actions at the global and national level that will address the challenges that threaten the bold vision of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unwomen.org\/en\/digital-library\/publications\/2015\/01\/beijing-declaration\"><strong>Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action<\/strong>,<\/a> twenty-five years after its adoption.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy working together- girls and boys, women and men- we can galvanize multilateral action to\u00a0realise\u00a0human rights of all women and girls,\u201d said\u00a0the President of the ±¬ÁÏÍø General Assembly Prof. Tijjani Muhammad- Bande in a video message to commemorate this year\u2019s International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s up to us to make sure that we use the power of multilateral investment and commitment to realize the potential gains from radical, positive action to redress long-standing inequalities in multiple areas of women\u2019s lives,\u201d said ±¬ÁÏÍø Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka.\u00a0 \u201cI ask governments and all other service providers including the private sector to take this opportunity to plan their response to COVID-19 as they have never done before, include women in its design, and fully take a gender perspective into account,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>COVID-19 has laid bare pre-existing inequalities. \u00a0Across every sphere, from health to the economy, security to social protection, women and girls are disproportionately affected.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While women\u2019s political representation has doubled since 1995, men still control more than three quarters of the seats in the single and lower houses of parliaments around the world.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly a billion women and girls 15 years and over lacked basic reading and writing skills in 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Women 25 to 34 years old are 25% more likely than men to live in poverty.<\/li>\n<li>It is the most marginalized women who have least contributed to the climate crisis who are most affected by environmental degradation and natural disasters.<\/li>\n<li>After years of progress, the proportion of peace agreements that included references to women dropped from 32 per cent between 2011 and 2015 to 7.7 per cent in 2018.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Priority actions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the 25<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, the progress review of this visionary agenda takes place for the first time in the context of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/\">the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/a> The 2030 Agenda, including SDG 5 on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls, highlighted the centrality of gender equality to progress across all the Goals and targets.<\/p>\n<p>The Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals, called for by world leaders at the SDG Summit in 2019, recognized the value in strengthening international cooperation to tackle both emerging and existing gaps in the realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
