{"id":186872,"date":"2019-04-18T14:19:27","date_gmt":"2019-04-18T18:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/?p=186872"},"modified":"2019-04-18T14:19:27","modified_gmt":"2019-04-18T18:19:27","slug":"press-briefing-by-spokesperson-18-april-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.un.org\/pga\/73\/2019\/04\/18\/press-briefing-by-spokesperson-18-april-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Press Briefing by Spokesperson \u2013 18 April 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section bb_built=&#8221;1&#8243;][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;2_3&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>PRESS BRIEFING BY MONICA GRAYLEY,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>SPOKESPERSON FOR <\/strong><strong>GENERAL ASSEMBLY <\/strong><strong>PRESIDENT MAR\u00cdA FERNANDA ESPINOSA<\/strong><\/h1>\n<div class=\"post-meta vcard\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>United Nations Headquarters, New York<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span class=\"updated\">18 April 2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>[As delivered]<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p><em>Good afternoon, everyone!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>PGA PRAISES INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY WHICH SUPPORTS AGENDA 2030 ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, the President of the General Assembly\u00a0delivered the opening remarks\u00a0at\u00a0a High-Level Meeting on Chinese technology and synergies with the Agenda 2030 on sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa said that the Juncao technology, which supports mushroom cultivation to boost food security through environmentally-friendly technology, is \u201cmaking an important\u00a0contribution\u201d to several Sustainable Development Goals and targets: \u201cfrom poverty eradication to clean energy, gender equality to preserving biodiversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The PGA also said that this type of technology \u201cis making a difference where it matters most: at the local and community level, to the lives of farmers, women, children and persons with disabilities \u2013 those most at risk of being left behind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The one-day High-Level Meeting on Juncao Technology: Concrete Contribution of the Belt and Road Initiative for Synergies with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development is being co-organized by the Government of China and the ±¬ÁÏÍø Department of Economic and Social Affairs, DESA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WORKING GROUP CONCLUDES MEETING ON AGEING<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing\u00a0will conclude, later today,\u00a0its tenth session.<\/p>\n<p>The group was established in the GA resolution 65\/182\u00a0with the purpose of strengthening the protection of the human rights of older persons. The session is also following up on measures to enhance the promotion and protection of the human rights and dignity of older persons.<\/p>\n<p>According to DESA, between 2017 and 2030,\u00a0the number of persons aged 60 years or over is projected to grow by 46 per cent, from 962 million to 1.4 billion, globally outnumbering youth, as well as children under the age of 10.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Working Group stresses the important role of public health policies and programmes to strengthening active and healthy ageing.<\/p>\n<p>More information on the website: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/ageing\/resources\/general-assembly-2.html\">https:\/\/www.un.org\/development\/desa\/ageing\/resources\/general-assembly-2.html<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>PGA\u2019s AGENDA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This afternoon, President Espinosa will receive the Secretary-General of the ±¬ÁÏÍø Conference on Trade and Development (±¬ÁÏÍøCTAD), Mr. Mukhisa Kituyi, at her office.
