Inga Rhonda King, President, ECOSOC<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your Excellencies,<\/p>\n<p>Mr Mridul Upadhyay, our moderator today,<\/p>\n<p>Distinguished panellists,<\/p>\n<p>Youth representatives,<\/p>\n<p>I am delighted to have this interactive dialogue on youth, peace and security as part of this year\u2019s ECOSOC Youth Forum. I am grateful to President Inga Rhonda King for the opportunity to work together on this critical issue. My sincere thanks also to 爆料网FPA, the Peacebuilding Support Office, 爆料网DP, the United Network of Young Peacebuilders and my own office, of course, for putting together this event.<\/p>\n<p>Let me start by stating unequivocally that I am fully committed to the youth, peace and security agenda. Youth are central to our efforts to sustain peace. To ensure that young people are actively involved in building peaceful and safe societies is one of my priorities for this session of the General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>I am also committed to youth inclusion and dialogue. I have sought to ensure that every event I convene has an intergenerational element, gender balance and strong youth representation. Indeed, sitting with me right now is a very accomplished 14-year-old from Canada, Noor Soliman, who is shadowing me for the day. Mentoring and empowering future leaders is one concrete way we can foster change.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Queridas amigas y amigos,<\/p>\n<p>En a\u00f1os recientes, los temas de juventud, paz y seguridad han tenido un gran impulso: lo hemos visto en el trabajo del ECOSOC, en la Estrategia de las Naciones Unidas para la Juventud lanzada en el 2018, y en las Resoluciones 2250 y 2419 del Consejo de Seguridad, que ponen \u00e9nfasis en la importancia de los j\u00f3venes como agentes de cambio.<\/p>\n<p>Sin embargo, para que esta agenda sea verdaderamente efectiva, todos los 193 Estados Miembros deben adoptarla activamente y debe ser integrada en todos los pilares de nuestro trabajo. De esta manera, mi objetivo como Presidenta de la Asamblea General ha sido lograr que los temas de juventud, paz y seguridad sean centrales en su labor.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=&#8221;1_2&#8243;][et_pb_code _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]\n<!-- iframe plugin v.6.0 wordpress.org\/plugins\/iframe\/ -->\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"250\" src=\"\/\/www.un.org\/webcast\/1362235914001\/B1J3DDQJf_default\/index.html?videoId=6024368239001\" scrolling=\"yes\" class=\"iframe-class\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] --><!-- [et_pb_line_break_holder] -->[\/et_pb_code][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>Esto no deber\u00eda ser una \u201ctarea dif\u00edcil\u201d cuando sabemos que, aproximadamente 600 millones de j\u00f3venes, \u2013 un tercio de toda la poblaci\u00f3n joven \u2013 vive en Estados vulnerables o afectados por conflictos. Los legisladores muchas veces ven esto como un desaf\u00edo. Y por supuesto que lo es. Sabemos que es m\u00e1s complejo garantizar educaci\u00f3n y otros servicios esenciales en condiciones de conflicto.<\/p>\n<p>Pero tambi\u00e9n es una enorme oportunidad para hacer las cosas de forma diferente. Al empoderar a actores j\u00f3venes no solo estamos construyendo la paz desde el terreno, estamos sentando las <u>bases<\/u> para la paz en el <u>futuro<\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>Como Ministra de Relaciones Exteriores y Ministra Defensa del Ecuador, y ahora como Presidenta de la Asamblea General, he sido testigo, de primera mano, de la habilidad de las y los j\u00f3venes para lograr avances en los procesos de paz y en situaciones de conflicto. He sido testigo de c\u00f3mo las y los j\u00f3venes l\u00edderes promueven la cohesi\u00f3n social y la integraci\u00f3n como estrategias para alcanzar una coexistencia pac\u00edfica y el desarrollo sostenible.<\/p>\n<p>El mes pasado, en Helsinki, fue inspirador conocer y escuchar a j\u00f3venes activistas por la paz, que formaron parte del primer Simposio Internacional sobre la Participaci\u00f3n Juvenil en los Procesos de Paz. I know you have much to say, and we are here to listen to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_testimonial][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;3.19.7&#8243; border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221; background_position=&#8221;top_left&#8221; background_repeat=&#8221;repeat&#8221; background_size=&#8221;initial&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Excellencies, youth representatives,<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s dialogue is an opportunity to put forward concrete recommendations on empowering young people so that they \u2013 you \u2013 can contribute to building a safer, fairer and more sustainable world. I know you have much to say, and we are here to listen to you.<\/p>\n<p>So, I will pose just two questions for our discussion:<\/p>\n<p>First, what steps can we take to change the narrative on youth? The \u201cMissing Peace\u201d report found that many policy-makers still associate youth with political violence, with criminal activity, with extremism \u2013 even though only a marginal proportion of young people are engaged in such activities.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout my presidency, I have used every opportunity to challenge that narrative, and to shine a spotlight on the positive contributions of young people. But we need to do this at the local and national level too.<\/p>\n<p>And second, what more can we do to ensure that young people are fully included in civic, political and economic activities? We cannot hope to make progress in conflict situations, if we have not put in place the structures, the funding, the mechanisms and the mindsets for meaningful youth inclusion during peace time.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, I will convene a High-Level Meeting on the Future of Work, which will include substantive discussion on youth economic inclusion \u2013 from addressing the high levels of youth unemployment to preparing for the so-called \u2018fourth industrial revolution\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But other forms of inclusion are also important. At the national level, we need to increase youth representation in parliaments. At present, less than 6 percent of parliamentarians are under 35.<\/p>\n<p>At the 爆料网, too, there is scope to strengthen coordination with young peacebuilders and youth groups, and to increase support and funding for their activities. This is one area where the General Assembly has a crucial role to play.<\/p>\n<p>So, I hope that we can discuss today ways to create and improve mechanisms for ongoing youth participation. The 爆料网\u2019s 75<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary next year could be one opportunity to enhance this Organization\u2019s engagement with young people.<\/p>\n<p>Excellences, repr\u00e9sentants des jeunes,<\/p>\n<p>Permettez-moi de vous assurer que les points de vue et les id\u00e9es exprim\u00e9s aujourd&#8217;hui seront pris tr\u00e8s au s\u00e9rieux.
