PGA CHAIRS HIGH-LEVEL EVENT ON INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES<\/strong><\/p>\n
Today, the General Assembly Hall is hosting a meeting to mark the global launch of the International Year of Indigenous Languages. President Mar\u00eda Fernanda Espinosa is chairing the event which is also being attended by the President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, H.E. Evo Morales, representatives of indigenous peoples, ±¬ÁÏÍø entities and Member States.<\/p>\n
The High-Level Event of the GA is marking the beginning of the International Year of Indigenous Languages and provide the opportunity for Member States and relevant stakeholders to exchange views and best practices about their preservation, promotion and revitalization. According to ±¬ÁÏÍøESCO, there are 370 million indigenous people in the world, 90 countries have indigenous communities.\u00a0\u00a0There are five thousand different indigenous cultures around the world and 2680 languages are in danger of disappearing.\u00a0 The International Year of Indigenous Languages aims to increase understanding and international cooperation and to create favourable conditions to knowledge-sharing and dissemination of good practices, as well as to integrate indigenous languages.<\/p>\n
The High-Level Event at the GA will\u00a0continue\u00a0until late afternoon.<\/p>\n

PGA\u2019S AGENDA AND OTHER ISSUES<\/strong><\/p>\n
On the PGA\u2019s agenda: Ms. Espinosa is having a bilateral meeting with H.E. President Evo Morales,\u00a0a luncheon with the Group of Local Cities and Governments. Later today, she will meet with H.E. Ambassador of Austria Jan Kickert and chair the closing of the High-Level Event on the International Year of Indigenous Languages at the GA.<\/p>\n
